A. The Meaning of Adverbs
Adverb is the word or the group of the word that use to explain verb, adjective, other adverbs, or noun phrase, and all of sentence. Or word that used to explain part of speech, except nouns and pronouns
Ex. Mardhatillah studies too hard
Idha is very diligent
Iema speaks slowly
B. The Kind of Adverbs
In English Grammar, adverb has some types, but in this part explain only 12 (twelve) kinds of adverbs that very important and usually used in sentences.
1. Adverb of Manner
Adverb that can used to explain how to do some works, action, statements,. This adverb can used to answer question such as, how, in what way, by metode. Beside that, this adverb is named adverb of quality.
This adjective added by –ly, located after verb or object or located before verb in a sentence.
a.late d.well
b.hardly e.fast
c.exactly f.lately
Ex. Iema speaks in front of us gladly
2. Adverb of Time
Adverb that used to explain the time of the phenomenon, action or job occured. Adverb of time used to answer the question such as : how long, how often, how soon, when, at what time, at what intervals, etc.
Adverb of time defided into two parts:
a. Adverb of Definite time.
It is used to show definite time. Generally, adverb of definite time, placed at the first or the end of sentence. Certain words such as:
- Today - tonight - last week
- Tomorrow - now - next year
- Everyday - yesterday - at three o’clock
Ex. Last week she went to Canada to study there
My father goes to his office everyday
b. Adverb of Indefinite Time
Used to show the indefinite time, generally Adverb of indefinite time placed before infinitive and or to be or placed after auxiliary verb. The certain word of adverb of Indefinite Time, such as:
- Ever - already - presently
- Usually - sometimes - lately
- Still - never - often
- Recently - yet, etc
3. Adverb of Place
Adverb of place used to explain position or place that something became. This adverb used to answer question such as: where, in what place, at what place. Generally, this adverb from preposition is following the word that show a place before adverb of time
Included:
-There, here, about, anywhere, around, inside, near,elsewhere, therewith, within, on, in.
Ex. I am sitting beside you, here
4. Adverb of Direction
It used to show from where and where will it goes. According to all of the expert including in the adverb of place, included:
-Above, back, back and forth, backwards, below, down, there, inwards.
5. Adverb of Frequency
Used to explain frequency, even ofter or not or how much the work we done. This adverb usually used to answer question such as: how often,. Beside yhat this adverb placed after subject in the sentence.
Included:
-always, sometimes, seldom, ever, generally, repetedly, regularly, etc
6. Adverb of Quantity
Used to explain amount or what times an activity is done or the phenomenon occured. Adverb of quantity used to answer question such as: how many times.
Included:
-once, one fold, three fold, little, twice, half, etc.
7. Adverb of Probabilty
Used to explain possibility. Adverb of probability placed before or after subject in the sentence.
Inculded:
-perhaps, possibly, maybe, etc
8. Adverb of Degree
Used to explain standard and degree, or used to explain how far condition and event. Adverb of Degree used to answer question such as: how much, how little, is it more, is it less, and in what degree.
Adverb of degree is decided into two parts:
a. Adverb of Degree that show “how much” have connection with adjectives or adverb. Included:
-too, very, enough, equally, only, fairly, extremely, rather
b. Adverb of degree that show “how complete” have connection with verb or adjectives. Included:
-almost, hardly, deeply, exactly, nearly, fully
9. Adverb of Affirmation
used to explain the affirmation, pressing or agreement to an answer. Adverb of affirmation placed in the first of sentence, or after subject or after object or aftre to be. And this adverb is called adverb of certainy.Included:
-really, actually, doubless, clearly,, of course, decidely, absolutely
10. Adverb of Negation
Used to explain negation statement. Included:
-no, nowise, never, not, nay, etc.
11. Relative Adverb
Used to connect two sentences become a sentence or two clauses become a clause. The word that including in Relative Adverb has similary with interrogative adverb, the difference is their position in sentence. Relative adverb commonly places in the middle of sentence but interrogative adverb placed in the first of sentence.Included:
-when, where, how, why, while, according;y, besides, nevertheless, etc
12. Interrogative Adverb
Used to give, ask, or make a question. Included:
-when, where, how often, why, how many
C. The Form of Adverb
1. Simple adverb is adverb just consist of one word, such as slowly, very, usually, well, etc.
2. Compound adverb or derived adverb is adverb that consist of two words or more and has one meaning such as else, where, wherreever, heretofore, herein, etc.
3. Phrase adverb is adverb that consist of two words or more in idiomatic make united. Phrase adverb decided into four parts are:
a. Prepositional Phrase: adverb consist of two words or more and marked by preposition and object of preposition.
Ex. Yenny will arrive before noon.
b. Infinitive Phrase: adverb from infinitive
Ex. The basketball team played eagerly to win
c. Phrase with Gerund
Ex. Seeing the black cloud, I took out an umbrella from my bag.
d. Phrase with Verb+ed
Ex. Urged by determination, he finished his work.
D. The Function of Adverb
According to the meaning of adverb: that adverb is used to explain verb, adjective and other adverb, noun phrase, and all sentences, So, adverb have function are:
1. Adverb as modifier of a verb
Ex. He does everything carefully
2. Adverb as modifier an adjective
Ex. His family is very rich
3. Adverb as modifier other adverbs
Ex. You dance very well.
4. Adverb as modifier Noun Phrase
Ex. He had quite a party
5. Adverb as modifier preposition
Ex. I knew him long before you did
6. Adverb as modifier of conjunction
Ex. I like her simply because she is rich
7. Adverb as modifier an entire sentence
Ex. Tomorrow I’ll not go to school with you
